Emotional Challenges of a New Mom
*this article is not in reference to Post Partum Depression (a treatable medical illness). ‘Sleep-deprivation, postpartum pains and constant nursing’, all these are from one box of challenges for a new mum.But the other box of Emotional Challenges stays hidden in the dark and rarely talked about. It’s more like the mystery box you see in reality shows. Everyone gets one but no one knows what’s in it. So what can be in that box? Fear, sadness, anger, doubts, isolation, emotional exhaustion, irritability… All these usually occur in initial weeks after baby’s birth. Suppressing instead of dealing with natural emotional challenges, takes a toll on your emotional health. So while you push hard to make everything work from taking care of the baby to managing yourself, house and social life; there is a dark-hole that you might slip slowly into. And then the monster of suppressed emotions conveniently hunts you down. You feel like you are sitting alone...
